Joshua Harris, composer

Welcome to my home on the web. I am a composer living in Denton, Texas.

Please take a look around. The audio player on the right contains a few samples of my recent compositions. Email me if you would like PDFs of any of the scores.

The Way the Moonlight Strikes a Cold Mountain Lake When No One Is Watching (2007) was inspired by small, lonely lakes high in the Rocky Mountains. It combines several compositional approaches including isorhtyhm, algorithm, and improvisation. This recording features Michael Pluebell on steel pans, Patrick Peringer on electric guitar and myself on piano from a live performance in Denton, Texas in November 2009.

The Mysterious Mirror (2007) was composed for the New York-based new music quartet Flexible Music who recorded it in Provo in the fall of 2007 (I am playing crystal goblets on the recording of "Hun"). The Mysterious Mirror won first prize in the Vera Hinckley Mayhew Award, music composition division, in 2008.

the five notes make his ears deaf (2007) was premiered at the Contemporary Music Festival at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina in 2008 by the ASU Flute Choir, directed by Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham.

Seasons (2006) is a song cycle that sets the writings of 15th century poet Yun Seon-do to music inspired by Korean music. The harmony and form are based on the traditional Korean court music shijo, but with many out-of-character moments that produce a unique sound. Baritone Hyrum Weibell recorded this in the fall of 2006 in Provo, Utah.

Phases, Durations, and Flight (2006) are instrumental interludes that take some of the thematic elements of Seasons, and apply contemporary compositional processes to them.

My current project is a new work for the Appalachian State University Wind Ensemble, conducted by John Ross to be premiered some time next spring.
